Wheels and Axles: The Lemonade Stand

Squeeze, pour and roll! At the Lemonade Stand, red wagons carry the jugs, pinwheels spin on the counter, and a big lemon press with a turning wheel squeezes the lemons.

Remember: A wheel and axle is a big wheel fixed to a thin rod, the axle, so they turn together. Turning the big wheel takes less force than turning the thin axle. Wheels also roll, so moving things on wheels makes less friction than dragging them. Doorknobs, steering wheels, wagons and taps are wheels and axles.

Magic trick: Big wheel, easy turn.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Lemonade Stand and find:

  • ๐Ÿ›’ Find the 2 red wagons. 4 wheels each: 2 ร— 4 = 8 wheels, every one on an axle.
  • ๐Ÿ‹ Find the lemon press with its big wheel. Turning the big wheel is easier than turning the thin rod inside.
  • ๐ŸŒ€ Find the 3 pinwheels. Each one spins around its middle, just like a wheel.
  • ๐Ÿฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
