Pulleys: The Star Tower Lift
High up at the Star Tower, Professor Luna Moon lifts her star maps to the balcony with a pulley. Telescopes point at the sky, and star-shaped lanterns hang along the railing.
Remember: A pulley is a wheel with a groove and a rope running around it. A fixed pulley stays in one place and changes the direction of your pull: pull down to lift up. It does not make the load feel lighter. Two pulleys working together let you pull with less force, but you pull twice as much rope. Flagpoles, cranes and window blinds use pulleys.
Magic trick: One pulley turns your pull around. Two pulleys share the load.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Star Tower Lift and find:
- 🧺 Find the basket on the rope. Luna pulls down on her end, and the basket goes up.
- 🔭 Find the 3 telescopes on the balcony. They were lifted up there with the pulley too!
- ⭐ Find the 5 star lanterns. Each one hangs on the railing, ready for star-gazing.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
