3D Shapes: The Block Playroom
In the Block Playroom, Millie builds with wooden blocks shaped like cubes, cylinders and cones. These are solid (3D) shapes: you can pick them up and hold them.
Remember: A face is a flat surface, an edge is where two faces meet, and a corner (vertex) is where edges meet. A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners. A square pyramid has 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 corners. A cylinder has 2 flat circle faces, a cone has 1, and a sphere has none: their curved surfaces are not flat faces.
Magic trick: Count a cube in layers: 4 corners on top and 4 on the bottom make 8. Its edges are 4 on top, 4 on the bottom and 4 standing up: 12.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Block Playroom and find:
- ๐ง Find the cube blocks. There are 4, and each cube has 6 faces, so 4 ร 6 = 24 faces.
- ๐ฅซ Find the cylinder blocks. There are 3, each with 2 flat circle faces: 6 flat faces altogether.
- ๐ฆ Find the cone blocks. There are 2. Each cone has just 1 flat circle face, on the bottom.
- ๐ฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
