Walking Around the Edge: The Picture Frames
It’s Millie’s Art Show! Millie frames her paintings and trims every frame with ribbon. To know how much ribbon goes around a picture, she finds its perimeter: the distance all the way around the edge.
Remember: Perimeter = add up every side. A rectangle has 2 long sides and 2 short sides, so a picture 5 cm long and 3 cm wide has a perimeter of 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 cm. Perimeter is a length, so it is in plain cm or m.
Magic trick: Walk your finger around the edge and say each side as you pass it, until you’re back where you started. A rectangle has four sides, so you should say four numbers.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Art Show and find:
- ๐ผ๏ธ Find the 4 square frames. A square has 4 equal sides, so its perimeter is one side added 4 times.
- ๐ Find the 2 rainbow paintings. Each frame has 2 long sides and 2 short sides. The perimeter adds all 4.
- ๐ Find the gold ribbon around the mosaic. The mosaic is 2 rows of 4 tiles. Walk around it and you pass 4 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 12 tile sides.
- ๐ฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
