Rows ร— Columns: The Quilt Club

Hana, Lily and Zoe meet at the Quilt Club to sew patchwork quilts out of little square patches. Every quilt is a rectangle of squares in neat rows and columns.

Remember: For a rectangle of squares, area = rows ร— squares in each row. A quilt of 3 rows of 4 squares has an area of 3 ร— 4 = 12 squares.

Magic trick: No need to count every square! Count one row, count the rows, and use your times tables. Turning the quilt sideways doesn’t change it: 3 ร— 4 and 4 ร— 3 are both 12.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Quilt Club and find:

  • ๐Ÿงต Find the big quilt on the stand. 3 rows of 4 squares: 3 ร— 4 = 12 squares.
  • ๐Ÿงธ Find the doll quilt on the table. 2 rows of 3 squares: 2 ร— 3 = 6 squares.
  • ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Find the patchwork cushion. 2 rows of 2 squares: 2 ร— 2 = 4 squares.
  • ๐Ÿฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
