Checking with Multiplication: The Lemonade Stand
At the Lemonade Stand, Zoe and Mia stack cups on trays and pack lemons in baskets, and they check every division the clever way: with multiplication.
Remember: Multiplying undoes dividing. To check 27 ÷ 6 = 4 R 3, multiply and add the remainder: 4 × 6 = 24, and 24 + 3 = 27. You’re back to the number you started with, so it’s right!
Magic trick: Answer × the number you divided by + the remainder = the number you started with.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Lemonade Stand and find:
- 🥤 Find the 4 trays of cups and the 3 cups on their own. If each tray holds 6 cups, there are 27 cups: 27 ÷ 6 = 4 R 3. Check it: 4 × 6 = 24, and 24 + 3 = 27.
- 🍋 Find the 2 baskets of lemons and the 1 lemon on its own. 11 lemons in baskets of 5: 11 ÷ 5 = 2 R 1. Check it: 2 × 5 = 10, and 10 + 1 = 11.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
