Challenge Stories: The Octopus Tea Party

Welcome to the Octopus Tea Party, where Octavia pours tea with all 8 arms! Her party stories take two steps: work something out first, then divide, and decide what the remainder means.

Remember: Read the whole story, then plan: what do I need to find first? Do one step at a time, and check that your answer makes sense in the story.

Magic trick: Before you answer, ask: does it fit the story? You can’t leave a guest without a seat, and a remainder is never as big as a group!

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Octopus Tea Party and find:

  • ☕ Find the 3 tables of teacups and the 2 cups on the tray. 17 teacups at tables of 5 fill 3 tables with 2 cups left: 17 ÷ 5 = 3 R 2, so a fourth table would make room for them all.
  • 🫖 Find the 4 teapots standing on the sand. If the teapots pour 36 cups of tea equally, each one pours 36 ÷ 4 = 9 cups.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
