How Much More?: The Yard Sale

Next to the Lemonade Stand, the neighbours are having a Yard Sale, with teddy bears, kites and storybooks spread out on the lawn. To find how much more one thing costs than another, or how much more money you need, we subtract.

Remember: How much more = the bigger amount take away the smaller amount. A kite costs $3.50 and Zoe has $2.00, so she needs $3.50 โˆ’ $2.00 = $1.50 more.

Magic trick: Count up from the smaller amount to the bigger one: from $2.00, add $1.00 to get $3.00, then $0.50 to get $3.50. That’s $1.50 more!

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Yard Sale and find:

  • ๐Ÿงธ Find the teddy bears on the table. There are 4 teddy bears. If a teddy costs $3.00 and a ball costs $1.00, the teddy costs $2.00 more.
  • ๐Ÿช Find the kites on the washing line. There are 3 kites. Zoe has $2.00 and a kite costs $3.50, so she needs $1.50 more.
  • ๐Ÿ“š Find the storybooks on the blanket. Count them: 5 storybooks in a row.
  • ๐Ÿฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
