Shape Riddles: The Octopus Tea Party

Octavia the octopus loves riddles! At her tea party under the sea, the sandwiches and cakes are cut into shapes, and every guest has to guess the shape from Octavia’s clues.

Remember: Use the clues one at a time. For a flat shape, count the sides and corners, and look for equal sides, square corners and parallel sides. For a solid shape, count its faces, edges and corners, and look for curved surfaces.

Magic trick: Be a shape detective: after each clue, cross out the shapes it can’t be, until only one is left.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Octopus Tea Party and find:

  • ๐Ÿฅช Find the triangle sandwiches. There are 4, each with 3 corners: 4 ร— 3 = 12 corners.
  • ๐Ÿฐ Find the square cakes. There are 3. Riddle: I have 4 equal sides and 4 square corners. What am I? (A square, like the top of each cake!)
  • ๐Ÿฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
