Volcanoes and Mountains: The Star Tower

From the balcony of the Star Tower, Professor Luna Moon’s telescope looks far, far away across the sea to a calm volcano island with a little puff of white steam, and to a row of snowy mountains.

Remember: Melted rock underground is magma; when it comes out on top it is lava. A volcano is an opening where magma comes up. Cooled lava hardens into igneous rock, and volcanoes can build whole islands, like Hawaii. Earth’s crust is split into giant pieces called plates; where plates push together, they lift up mountains over millions of years. The highest mountain on Earth is Mount Everest.

Magic trick: Magma stays in the Middle, underground. Lava has Left the volcano.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Star Tower and find:

  • 🌋 Find the volcano island far out at sea. Cooled lava builds new land, and even whole islands.
  • 🏔️ Find the 6 snowy mountains. They were pushed up by giant pieces of Earth’s crust over millions of years.
  • 🪨 Find the 3 rocks on the table. All three are igneous rock, made when lava cooled.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
