Erosion: Mermaid Lagoon
At Mermaid Lagoon, Octavia watches the waves wash over the beach, a little river carry sand into the lagoon, and the wind blow sand into grassy dunes. Will the sandcastles last?
Remember: Erosion is when water, wind or ice carry bits of rock and soil away to a new place. Where the water or wind slows down, it drops them: that is deposition. Fast water can carry bigger rocks than slow water. Plant roots hold soil and sand in place. A river carved the Grand Canyon over millions of years.
Magic trick: Erosion moves it, deposition drops it.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Mermaid Lagoon and find:
- 🏰 Find the 4 sandcastles. The waves will carry their sand away: that is erosion.
- 🌾 Find the 3 grassy dunes. The wind piled up the sand, and the grass roots hold it in place.
- 🏞️ Find the little stream flowing into the lagoon. Moving water carries sand along, and where it slows down it drops the sand: that is deposition.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
