Leaves Make Food: The Glass House
Sunlight pours through the walls of the Glass House, a sparkling greenhouse full of leafy plants. Every green leaf in here is busy making food!
Remember: Leaves are a plant’s food factories. They use sunlight, water (from the roots) and carbon dioxide (a gas from the air) to make sugar for food. This is called photosynthesis. While they do it, they give off oxygen, the gas we breathe. A green colour called chlorophyll catches the sunlight.
Magic trick: Photo means light and synthesis means putting together: photosynthesis is putting food together with light.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Glass House and find:
- 🪴 Find the 6 leafy plants on the table. Their big green leaves are soaking up sunlight to make food.
- 🌿 Find the 3 hanging baskets. Even high up, the ferns’ leaves turn sunlight into food.
- 💧 Find the 2 watering cans. Water goes in through the roots and up to the leaves.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
