Area of Rectangles: The Castle Floor Tiles
Princess Ruby is tiling the floors of her castle with big square tiles, each 1 m on every side. Each tile covers 1 square m, so the area of a floor tells her how many tiles she needs.
Remember: Area of a rectangle = length ร width, in square units. A floor 4 m long and 3 m wide has an area of 4 ร 3 = 12 square m: that’s 12 tiles of 1 m by 1 m.
Magic trick: Picture the tiles: the length tells you how many tiles in a row, the width tells you how many rows. Then it’s just rows ร columns again!
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Princess Ruby’s Castle and find:
- ๐ Find the pink and lavender tiles in front of the throne. 3 rows of 5 tiles: 3 ร 5 = 15 square m, if each tile is 1 m on every side.
- ๐ช Find the tall window. It has 3 rows of 2 panes: 3 ร 2 = 6 panes of glass.
- โจ Find the gold mosaic on the wall. 2 rows of 2 tiles: 2 ร 2 = 4 squares.
- ๐ฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
