Map Squares: The Mermaid Lagoon Map
Under the waves at Mermaid Lagoon, Octavia the octopus has a map split into squares by straight lines: a grid. Each square has a name made of a letter and a number, like B3, so she can tell her friends exactly where the prettiest shells are.
Remember: On a grid map, the letters name the columns going across from the left: A, B, C, D… The numbers name the rows, counted from the bottom: 1, 2, 3… Square B3 is in column B and row 3. Say the letter first, then the number.
Magic trick: Letter first, then number, just like you say your ABCs before you count: walk along to the letter, then climb up to the number.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Mermaid Lagoon and find:
- 🗺️ Find Octavia’s map on the big flat stone. It is a grid of 3 rows of 4 squares: 3 × 4 = 12 squares.
- 🐚 Find the spiral seashells on the sand. There are 5, side by side in one row.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
