Rows and Columns: Biscuit's Toy Shelf
In Millie’s bedroom stands a big toy shelf full of little square cubbies, with one toy in each. The cubbies line up in rows that go across and columns that go up and down, so every toy has its own address.
Remember: A row goes across, from side to side. A column goes up and down. To find a cubby, count the columns from the left and the rows from the bottom. A shelf with 3 rows and 4 columns has 3 × 4 = 12 cubbies.
Magic trick: A column stands up tall, like the columns that hold up a castle roof. A row lies across, like a row of seats at a show.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Biscuit’s Toy Shelf and find:
- 🗄️ Find the toy shelf. Its cubbies are in 3 rows across and 4 columns up and down: 3 × 4 = 12 cubbies.
- 🧸 Find the teddy bear. Counting rows from the bottom and columns from the left, it is in row 3, column 1: the top row, on the left.
- 🧱 Find the toy blocks on the rug. There are 5 in one row, side by side across the rug.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
