North and South Poles: Princess Ruby's Toy Room
In Princess Ruby’s Toy Room at Rainbow Castle, the wooden toy train has a little magnet at each end of every carriage, bar magnets lie on the table, and a compass sits by the window.
Remember: Every magnet has two poles: a north pole and a south pole. Opposite poles attract (north and south pull together). Like poles repel (north and north, or south and south, push apart). A compass needle is a tiny magnet that points north, because Earth acts like a giant magnet.
Magic trick: Different poles are friends; the same poles push apart.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Princess Ruby’s Toy Room and find:
- 🚂 Find the 4 train carriages. Their magnets join up when opposite poles meet.
- 🧲 Find the 3 bar magnets. Each one has 2 poles: 3 × 2 = 6 poles in all.
- 🧭 Find the compass on the windowsill. Its needle is a tiny magnet that points north.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
