Magnets Attract: The Magnet Workshop

Up in the Magnet Workshop at the Star Tower, Professor Luna Moon is testing what her big red magnet will pick up. Paper clips leap to it, iron nails wait on a tray, and some things won’t move at all.

Remember: A magnet attracts (pulls on) things made of iron or steel, like paper clips and iron nails. It does not attract wood, plastic, glass, rubber or paper. Not every metal sticks to a magnet. A bar magnet pulls hardest at its two ends.

Magic trick: Test it! If a magnet pulls it, there is iron or steel inside.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Magnet Workshop and find:

  • 🧲 Find the 4 paper clips hanging from the red magnet. Paper clips are steel, so the magnet attracts them.
  • 🔩 Find the 3 iron nails. Iron is magnetic too.
  • 🧸 Find the 5 things on the other tray. Wood, plastic, glass, rubber and a crayon: a magnet can’t pick up any of them!
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
