Friction: The Snowy Skating Pond
Brrr! The Snowy Skating Pond is frozen smooth and shiny. Wooden sleds wait at the top of the hill, snowmen stand along the bank, and Grandma Bea is sprinkling sand on the path.
Remember: Friction is a force that slows things down when two surfaces rub together. Rough surfaces like carpet, grass and sandpaper make more friction. Smooth surfaces like ice make less. Rubbing also makes heat.
Magic trick: Rough = grip and slow. Smooth = slip and go.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Snowy Skating Pond and find:
- 🛷 Find the 3 sleds. Snow is smooth, so there is little friction and the sleds zoom down.
- ⛄ Find the 4 snowmen. They stay still on the bank, because nothing pushes or pulls them along.
- 🏖️ Find the sandy path. Sand makes the path rough, so there is more friction and nobody slips.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
