Sharing with Leftovers: Millie's Kitchen
Welcome to Millie’s Kitchen, where Grandma Bea has baked cookies and washed strawberries! When she shares them out equally, some don’t fit: the ones left over are called the remainder.
Remember: 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R 2: share 14 cookies onto 3 plates and each plate gets 4, with 2 left over. The R stands for remainder, the part left over.
Magic trick: Ask your times table: what is the biggest 3 × ? that fits in 14? 3 × 4 = 12, and 14 − 12 = 2 left over.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Kitchen and find:
- 🍪 Find the 3 plates of cookies and the 2 cookies on the cooling rack. 14 cookies shared onto 3 plates give each plate 4, with 2 left over: 14 ÷ 3 = 4 R 2.
- 🍓 Find the 2 bowls of strawberries and the 1 strawberry on the cutting board. Grandma Bea shared her strawberries between the bowls, and 1 was left over. If she had 9 strawberries, 9 ÷ 2 = 4 R 1: 4 in each bowl and 1 on the board.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
