Most, Least and the Difference: Mermaid Lagoon
Down in Mermaid Lagoon, Octavia the octopus keeps a chart of every shell and starfish her friends find. Who found the most? Who found the least? And how many more?
Remember: The most is the biggest number and the least (or fewest) is the smallest. How many more means the difference: take the smaller number away from the bigger one.
Magic trick: “How many more” is never the biggest number on its own. Ask: how far is it from one bar to the other? Count up from the small one to the big one.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Mermaid Lagoon and find:
- 🐚 Find Octavia’s shell rows. The most is the top row: 6 pink scallop shells. The least is the bottom row: 2 white shells. The difference is 6 − 2 = 4.
- 🌀 Find the spiral shells. There are 4 spiral shells, 2 fewer than the scallops.
- ⭐ Find the starfish. Count them: 5 starfish.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
