Mode and Range: Rainbow Castle
At Rainbow Castle, Princess Ruby counts the gems in her treasure boxes. Two new data words help her: the mode and the range.
Remember: The mode is the number that shows up most often. The range is how spread out the data is: the biggest number take away the smallest. In 4, 7, 4, 9, 4 the mode is 4 and the range is 9 − 4 = 5.
Magic trick: Mode sounds like most: the one you see most. Range is from the smallest all the way to the biggest, like a mountain range from one end to the other.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Rainbow Castle and find:
- 💎 Find the treasure boxes. They hold 2, 4, 2, 3 and 2 gems. 2 gems shows up most often, so the mode is 2. The range is 4 − 2 = 2.
- 🚩 Find the pink flags on the towers. Count them: 4 flags.
- 👑 Find the crowns. There are 3 crowns on cushions.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
