More Than One Whole: The Picnic Pies
Chef Rosie brings pies cut into quarters to a picnic in the meadow. When there are more quarter slices than one pie holds, the fraction is more than 1 whole: 5 quarter slices is 5/4 of a pie.
Remember: When the top number is bigger than the bottom number, the fraction is more than 1. 4 quarters make 1 whole pie, so 5/4 = 1 1/4: 1 whole pie and 1 quarter more. A number like 1 1/4 is called a mixed number.
Magic trick: Make whole pies out of the slices: every 4 quarters make 1 whole pie, and the slices left over are the fraction.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Picnic Pies and find:
- 🥧 Find the apple pie and the extra slice on its own plate. That’s 5 quarter slices: 5/4 = 1 1/4 pies.
- 🥪 Find the sandwiches. 2 whole sandwiches and 1 more half make 5 halves: 5/2 = 2 1/2 sandwiches.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
