Mixed Numbers: The Juice Bar

At the Juice Bar, Lily pours juice from big glass pitchers. A mixed number like 2 1/2 means 2 full pitchers and 1/2 of another one.

Remember: To turn a mixed number into a fraction, change the wholes into parts and add the extra parts: 1 2/3 = 3/3 + 2/3 = 5/3. To add mixed numbers, add the wholes, then add the parts: 1 1/4 + 1 2/4 = 2 3/4.

Magic trick: Times, then add, and keep the bottom: for 1 2/3, do 1 × 3 + 2 = 5, so it’s 5/3.
