Fractions of a Group: The Sleepover
It’s Sofia’s Sleepover! There are marshmallows to toast, pillows to fluff and mugs of cocoa to share. Finding a fraction like 3/4 of a group helps the girls share everything fairly.
Remember: To find 3/4 of 12, first find 1/4: share 12 into 4 equal groups, 3 in each. Then take 3 of those groups: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9. So 3/4 of 12 is 9.
Magic trick: Share by the bottom, times by the top! 12 shared into 4 groups is 3, and 3 × 3 = 9.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Sleepover and find:
- 🍡 Find the tray of 12 marshmallows. They lie in 4 rows of 3, and in every row 2 are toasted: 2/3 of 12 = 8 toasted marshmallows.
- 🛏️ Find the 8 pillows along the wall. 6 are pink: 3/4 of 8 = 6.
- ☕ Find the 9 mugs of cocoa. In every row of 3, 2 have whipped cream: 2/3 of 9 = 6 mugs.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
