Same Bottom Number: Sprinkle Bakery Cakes

At the Sprinkle Bakery, Chef Rosie bakes her cakes in trays of 8 equal squares. When two fractions have the same bottom number, the slices are the same size, so you just compare how many slices.

Remember: Same bottom number: the bigger top number is the bigger fraction. 5/8 is more cake than 3/8, because 5 slices is more than 3 slices of the same size. We write 3/8 < 5/8.

Magic trick: The < and > signs are hungry crocodiles: the open mouth always eats the bigger fraction.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Sprinkle Bakery and find:

  • 🍰 Find the tray on the left. It has 8 equal sections and 3 have cake, so it holds 3/8 of a tray of cake.
  • 🍰 Find the tray on the right. It holds 5/8. The squares are the same size, so 5/8 is more than 3/8: 3/8 < 5/8.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
