Fractions on a Number Line: The Ribbon Road
Biscuit is walking the Ribbon Road from Millie’s house to the Rainbow Castle. The road is a number line: Millie’s house is 0, the castle is 1, and flags split the road into equal steps.
Remember: Count the spaces between the flags, not the flags themselves. If 3 flags split the road into 4 equal spaces, each space is 1/4, and the third flag is at 3/4.
Magic trick: Put your finger on 0 and hop one space at a time, saying “one fourth, two fourths, three fourths…” until you reach the castle at 4/4 = 1.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Ribbon Road and find:
- 🏠 Find Millie’s house at the start of the road. That’s 0 on the number line.
- 🏰 Find the castle at the end of the road. That’s 1: the whole road, or 4/4.
- 🚩 Find the 3 flags. They split the road into 4 equal spaces. Biscuit sits at the third flag, so he has walked 3/4 of the way!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
