Fractions of a Group: Mermaid Lagoon
In Mermaid Lagoon, fractions aren’t only slices of pizza: a fraction can be part of a group. If 2 of 5 seashells are pink, then 2/5 of the shells are pink.
Remember: To find a fraction of a group, share the group into equal parts (the bottom number), then take as many parts as the top number. 1/3 of 9 fish: 9 shared into 3 equal groups is 3 in each group, so 1/3 of 9 is 3.
Magic trick: Your times tables help here! To find 1/4 of 12, ask “4 times what is 12?” The answer, 3, is 1/4 of 12.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Mermaid Lagoon and find:
- 🐚 Find the row of 5 seashells. 2 of the 5 are pink, so 2/5 of the shells are pink.
- 🧜 Find the 4 mermaids on the rock. 3 of the 4 have purple tails, so 3/4 of the mermaids have purple tails.
- ⭐ Find the 8 starfish. 4 of the 8 are orange, so 4/8, which is the same as 1/2, are orange.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
