Equal Fractions: The Octopus Tea Party
At the Octopus Tea Party, Octavia the octopus has two chocolate bars of exactly the same size. She snaps one bar into 2 halves and leaves the other in 8 small squares. Eating one half or 4 small squares is the same amount of chocolate!
Remember: Fractions that show the same amount are equal fractions: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8, and 1/3 = 2/6. To make one, multiply the top and the bottom by the same number.
Magic trick: Whatever you do to the bottom, do to the top! 1/2 β multiply both by 4 β 4/8.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Octopus Tea Party and find:
- π« Find the bar snapped into 2 halves. Each half is 1/2 of the bar. Count the squares in one half: there are 4!
- π« Find the whole bar of 8 small squares. 4 of its 8 squares are the same amount as one half, so 1/2 = 4/8.
- π± Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
