Dividing by 8: Octopus Tea Party
Dive back down to the Octopus Tea Party, where things come in eights! Octavia and her friends have 8 arms each and the crayons come in boxes of 8, so the party shares everything eight ways.
Remember: every division fact is a times table fact backwards.
- 16 ÷ 8 = 2 because 2 × 8 = 16
- 24 ÷ 8 = 3 because 3 × 8 = 24
- 56 ÷ 8 = 7 because 7 × 8 = 56
- 64 ÷ 8 = 8 because 8 × 8 = 64
Magic trick: Think multiplication: 64 ÷ 8 asks 8 × what = 64? Or halve, halve, halve: 64 → 32 → 16 → 8, so 64 ÷ 8 = 8.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Octopus Tea Party and find:
- 🐙 Find the 2 octopuses at the tea table. There are 16 arms and every octopus has 8, so 16 ÷ 8 = 2 octopuses.
- 🖍️ Find the 2 boxes of crayons. 16 crayons with 8 in each box: 16 ÷ 8 = 2 boxes.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
