Dividing by 4: Kitten Picnic
It’s another sunny day for the Kitten Picnic, where things come in fours! Kittens wear 4 booties, plates hold 4 strawberries and clovers have 4 leaves, so let’s share the picnic into fours.
Remember: every division fact is a times table fact backwards.
- 12 ÷ 4 = 3 because 3 × 4 = 12
- 20 ÷ 4 = 5 because 5 × 4 = 20
- 28 ÷ 4 = 7 because 7 × 4 = 28
- 36 ÷ 4 = 9 because 9 × 4 = 36
Magic trick: Think multiplication: 28 ÷ 4 asks 4 × what = 28? Or halve, then halve again: half of 28 is 14, half of 14 is 7, so 28 ÷ 4 = 7.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Kitten Picnic and find:
- 🐱 Find the 3 kittens in booties. There are 12 booties and every kitten wears 4, so 12 ÷ 4 = 3 kittens.
- 🍓 Find the 4 plates of strawberries. 16 strawberries shared equally onto 4 plates: 16 ÷ 4 = 4 strawberries on each.
- 🍀 Find the 2 four-leaf clovers. 8 leaves with 4 on each clover: 8 ÷ 4 = 2 clovers.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
