Dividing by 3: Ice Cream Parlor
Welcome back to the Ice Cream Parlor, where everything comes in threes! Cones get 3 scoops and tricycles have 3 wheels, so today we share the scoops, cherries and gummy bears into threes.
Remember: every division fact is a times table fact backwards.
- 6 ÷ 3 = 2 because 2 × 3 = 6
- 15 ÷ 3 = 5 because 5 × 3 = 15
- 21 ÷ 3 = 7 because 7 × 3 = 21
- 27 ÷ 3 = 9 because 9 × 3 = 27
Magic trick: Think multiplication: 24 ÷ 3 asks 3 × what = 24? Count by threes on your fingers until you reach 24: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 is 8 fingers, so 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Ice Cream Parlor and find:
- 🍦 Find the 4 triple-scoop cones. There are 12 scoops and every cone has 3, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4 cones.
- 🚲 Find the 2 tricycles. 6 wheels with 3 on each tricycle: 6 ÷ 3 = 2 tricycles.
- 🍨 Find the 3 sundaes. 9 scoops shared equally into 3 sundaes: 9 ÷ 3 = 3 scoops in each.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
