Place Value: The Chocolate Shop
Welcome to the Chocolate Shop! Hana sells chocolate three ways: whole bars, strips (each strip is 1/10 of a bar) and tiny squares (each is 1/100 of a bar). Every decimal has a place for each one.
Remember: In 2.35, the 2 is in the ones place (2 whole bars), the 3 is in the tenths place (3 strips, 0.3) and the 5 is in the hundredths place (5 tiny squares, 0.05). So 2.35 = 2 + 0.3 + 0.05.
Magic trick: Ones, point, tenths, hundredths: the place names that end in “ths” live after the point!
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Chocolate Shop and find:
- 🍫 Find the 2 whole chocolate bars. They are the ones: 2 whole bars.
- 🟫 Find the 3 loose strips and the 5 tiny squares. 3 strips are 3 tenths and 5 tiny squares are 5 hundredths, so the chocolate on the counter is 2.35 bars!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
