Decimals on a Number Line: The Frog Pond
At the Frog Pond, a straight path of lily pads crosses the water from the little dock (0) to the island (1). There are 10 equal jumps between them, so each jump is one tenth, 0.1.
Remember: A number line from 0 to 1 split into 10 equal jumps counts in tenths: 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 … 0.9, 1. Count the jumps, not the lily pads: 11 pads make 10 jumps. Halfway is 0.5.
Magic trick: Find 0.5 in the middle first. Then 0.4 is one jump before it and 0.6 is one jump after it.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Frog Pond and find:
- 🐸 Find the straight path of 11 lily pads. From the dock (0) to the island (1) there are 10 equal jumps. The frog has made 4 jumps from the first pad: it sits at 0.4!
- 🌉 Find the wooden footbridge. Its first 3 planks are painted pink. Count all the planks: how many are plain wood?
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
