Hundredths: The Quilt Club
At the Quilt Club, Lily and Sofia sew a giant square quilt from 100 little squares: 10 rows of 10. Each little square is one hundredth of the quilt, and a whole row of 10 squares is one tenth.
Remember: 45/100 = 0.45, which you say as “forty-five hundredths”. The second place after the decimal point is the hundredths place. When there are fewer than 10 hundredths, a zero holds the tenths place: 7/100 = 0.07.
Magic trick: Hundredths take two places after the point, just like cents take two places in $0.45.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Quilt Club and find:
- 🟪 Find the big quilt on the wall. It has 10 rows of 10 = 100 little squares. The top 4 rows are pink: 40/100 = 0.40 of the quilt.
- 🧵 Find the table runner of 10 squares. 3 are lavender: 3/10 = 0.3. That’s the same as 30/100 = 0.30!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
