Tenths: Grandma Bea's Cookie Trays

Welcome back to Millie’s Kitchen! Grandma Bea bakes her cookies in rows of 10, so every cookie is one tenth of the row. Tenths can be written as fractions, like 3/10, or as decimals, like 0.3.

Remember: 3/10 = 0.3, which you say as “zero point three” or “three tenths”. The first place after the decimal point is the tenths place, and 10 tenths make 1 whole: 10/10 = 1.0.

Magic trick: The point means “tenths are next”: the digit right after it tells you how many tenths. 0.7 is 7 tenths, so 0.7 = 7/10.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Kitchen and find:

  • 🍪 Find the tray of 10 cookies on the counter. 3 have pink icing: 3/10 = 0.3 of the cookies are iced, and 0.7 are plain.
  • 🧁 Find the tray of 10 cupcakes. 6 have a cherry on top: 6/10 = 0.6 of the cupcakes.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
