Comparing Decimals: Field Day
It’s Field Day! Coach Nora measures every long jump in metres, like 1.5 m or 1.45 m. Who jumped the farthest? Comparing decimals tells you, but watch out: a decimal with more digits is not always bigger!
Remember: Compare from the left: first the ones, then the tenths, then the hundredths. 0.5 > 0.45, because 5 tenths beats 4 tenths. A longer decimal is not always bigger!
Magic trick: Give them the same number of digits: 0.5 = 0.50, and 0.50 > 0.45 is easy to see.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Field Day and find:
- 🚩 Find the 3 flags in the sand pit. Each flag marks a jump. The flag farthest from the board shows the longest jump, like 1.5 m beating 1.45 m.
- 🏃 Find the 5 hurdles on the track. Count them: 5 hurdles in a row.
- 🏆 Find the podium with 3 steps. The trophy waits on the tallest step for the longest jump!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
