Decimals and Money: The Lemonade Stand
Back at the Lemonade Stand, Zoe and Mia count their money in dollars and cents. 100 cents make 1 dollar, so each cent is one hundredth of a dollar. That’s why money is written with two places after the point.
Remember: $0.75 = 75 cents = 75/100 of a dollar. The first place after the point is tenths of a dollar (10 cents each) and the second is hundredths (1 cent each). $0.05 is 5 cents, but $0.50 is 50 cents!
Magic trick: Read the cents as hundredths: $0.40 is 40 hundredths of a dollar, the same as 0.4 of a dollar.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Lemonade Stand and find:
- 🥤 Find the 2 rows of cups on the counter. 5 pink and 5 yellow make 10 cups. If each cup costs $0.10, one tenth of a dollar, then 10 cups cost 10 tenths: $1.00!
- 🍋 Find the 4 lemons. If each lemon costs $0.25, then 4 lemons cost $1.00: 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 = 100 hundredths.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
