Tens Times Ones: Farmer Daisy's Market
It’s market day at Farmer Daisy’s Market! Farmer Daisy packs her apples in bags of 10, so she counts them in tens: a crate with 2 bags holds 2 tens, which is 20 apples.
Remember: To work out 30 × 4, think in tens: 3 tens × 4 = 12 tens, and 12 tens is 120. Do the small fact (3 × 4 = 12), then put the 0 back on the end.
Magic trick: Hide the zero, multiply, then bring the zero back: 30 × 4 → 3 × 4 = 12 → 120.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Farmer Daisy’s Market and find:
- 🍎 Find the 4 crates of apples. Each crate has 2 bags of 10 apples: 2 tens. 4 crates hold 8 tens, so 20 × 4 = 80 apples.
- 🌷 Find the 5 buckets of tulips. If each bucket holds 50 tulips, then 5 × 50 = 250 tulips (5 × 5 tens = 25 tens).
- 🥕 Find the 3 bunches of carrots. If each bunch has 20 carrots, then 3 × 20 = 60 carrots.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
