Estimating: Princess Ruby's Castle Fair

Everyone is invited to Princess Ruby’s Castle Fair! There are so many apples, guests and lanterns that Princess Ruby doesn’t need the exact number: she wants a good guess, called an estimate.

Remember: To estimate, round the big number to the nearest ten, then multiply. 48 × 6 → 50 × 6 = about 300. Ones digit 5 or more: round up. 4 or less: round down.

Magic trick: Estimate first, then check: if your real answer is far from your estimate, try again!

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Princess Ruby’s Castle Fair and find:

  • 🏰 Find the 3 castle towers. If each tower has 52 windows, that’s about 3 × 50 = about 150 windows.
  • 🍎 Find the 6 tables with apple baskets. If each basket holds 48 apples, 6 baskets hold about 6 × 50 = about 300 apples.
  • 🏮 Find the 5 lanterns. If 18 strings each hold 5 lanterns, that’s about 20 × 5 = about 100 lanterns.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
