Doubling and Halving: The Lemonade Stand
Zoe and Mia are back at the Lemonade Stand, and they have a secret: 4 baskets of 5 lemons is the same as 2 baskets of 10 lemons. Halve one number, double the other, and the answer stays the same!
Remember: Double one number and halve the other: the answer does not change. 16 × 5 = 8 × 10 = 80. And times 4 is double, then double again: 18 × 4 → 36 → 72.
Magic trick: Times 5? Times 10, then halve! 18 × 5 → 18 × 10 = 180 → half is 90.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Lemonade Stand and find:
- 🥤 Find the cups of lemonade. 2 rows of 5: 2 × 5 = 10 cups.
- 🍋 Find the 4 baskets of lemons. If each basket holds 5 lemons, 4 baskets hold 20 lemons: the same as 2 baskets of 10, because 4 × 5 = 2 × 10.
- 🫗 Find the 2 pitchers. If each pitcher fills 16 cups, then 2 × 16 = double 16 = 32 cups.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
