Getting Through Winter: The Snowy Forest
Brrr! Professor Luna Moon takes a winter walk through the Snowy Forest. Geese fly south, squirrels bury acorns, a white hare hides in the snow, and deep underground a groundhog is fast asleep.
Remember: Animals get through winter in different ways. Some hibernate: they sleep deeply all winter, and their heartbeat and breathing slow way down (groundhogs). Some migrate: they travel to warmer places in autumn and come back in spring (geese, and monarch butterflies that fly to Mexico). Some change their coats (the snowshoe hare turns white), and some store food (squirrels).
Magic trick: Hibernate = stay home and sleep. Migrate = pack up and move.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Snowy Forest and find:
- 🪿 Find the 5 geese flying south. They migrate to warmer places for the winter.
- 🐿️ Find the 3 squirrels with acorns. They bury food in autumn to eat in winter.
- 💤 Find the groundhog asleep in its burrow. It hibernates all winter long.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
