Carrying Tens into Hundreds: The Star Tower
Welcome to the Star Tower, Professor Luna Moon’s little observatory on the hill! Tonight the club counts shooting stars by the hundred. When the tens add up to 10 or more, ten tens squeeze together into one hundred and carry over.
Remember: 263 + 184: ones 3 + 4 = 7. Tens 6 + 8 = 14 tens: write 4 and carry 1 hundred. Hundreds 2 + 1 + 1 = 4. So 263 + 184 = 447.
Magic trick: Ten tens make a hundred! Carry from the tens just like from the ones, and sometimes you carry twice.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Star Tower and find:
- 🌠 Find the shooting stars. Count them: 5 shooting stars. If the club saw 50 last night and 60 tonight, that’s 5 tens + 6 tens = 11 tens = 110 stars: carry 1 hundred!
- 🔭 Find the small telescopes on the balcony. There are 3 small telescopes in a row. If the club brings 2 more, that’s 3 + 2 = 5 telescopes.
- ⭐ Find the star cushions on the grass. There are 4 cushions for the stargazers.
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
