Millie & Biscuit

Subtracting Without Regrouping: Millie's Kitchen

Welcome to Millie’s Kitchen, where Grandma Bea bakes cookies and muffins! Something always gets eaten, so we take away. Here every top digit is big enough, so each place just takes away by itself.

Remember: Take away the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds: 365 − 142 → 5 − 2 = 3, 6 − 4 = 2, 3 − 1 = 2, so 223. The bigger number always goes on top.

Magic trick: Check by adding back! 223 + 142 = 365, so 365 − 142 = 223 is right.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Kitchen and find:

  • 🍪 Find the trays of cookies. Each tray has 6 cookies. If Grandma Bea eats 1 from a tray, 6 − 1 = 5 cookies are left on it.
  • 🫙 Find the jars on the shelf. There are 4 jars. Take 1 down for baking and 4 − 1 = 3 jars are still on the shelf.
  • 🧁 Find the muffins cooling by the window. Count them: 5 muffins.
  • 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
