Storms and Staying Safe: The Stormy Afternoon
Rain is drumming on the windows, but everyone is cozy inside! On this Stormy Afternoon, Grandma Bea has made cocoa, the cushions are piled high, and there is a flash of lightning far away over the hills.
Remember: Lightning is a giant spark of electricity. Thunder is the sound it makes when it heats the air very fast. We see lightning before we hear thunder because light travels faster than sound. Count the seconds between them: about 3 seconds for every 1 km away. When thunder roars, go indoors! Never shelter under a tall tree, and stay out of the water.
Magic trick: Flash, count, boom. Count the seconds, then share them into 3s to find about how many km away the storm is.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Stormy Afternoon and find:
- ⥠Find the lightning far away over the hills. Count after the flash: every 3 seconds until the thunder means about 1 km away.
- â Find the 3 mugs of cocoa. Indoors is the safest place to be in a thunderstorm.
- ðĶ Find the 2 flashlights on the windowsill. Handy if a storm turns the lights off!
- ðą Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
