Reading the Clock: Millie's Kitchen
Welcome to Millie’s Kitchen, where Millie bakes with Grandma Bea! Grandma Bea’s muffins need just the right time in the oven, so she always checks the big kitchen clock. Let’s learn to read it in words: o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.
Remember: The short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes. There are 60 minutes in 1 hour. o’clock is :00, quarter past is :15, half past is :30, and quarter to is :45 of the hour before: quarter to 6 is 5:45.
Magic trick: A clock is like a pizza cut into 4 quarters of 15 minutes. Quarter past = 1 quarter gone. Quarter to = only 1 quarter left before the next hour.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Kitchen and find:
- ๐ฐ๏ธ Find the big kitchen clock. It has no numbers, just 12 little hearts, one for each of the 12 hours.
- โณ Find the 4 sand timers. If each one runs for a quarter of an hour, then 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 = 60 minutes: 4 quarters make 1 hour.
- ๐ง Find the 2 trays of muffins. 2 trays ร 6 muffins = 12 muffins, as many as the hours on a clock.
- ๐ฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
