Minutes Past: Buttercup Park
It’s a breezy day in Buttercup Park! Kites dance in the sky and ducks paddle on the pond. Here we learn to read minutes past the hour, counting by 5s around the clock.
Remember: From one number on the clock to the next is 5 minutes. Count by 5s as the minute hand moves: on the 1 it’s 5 minutes past, on the 2 it’s 10, on the 3 it’s 15โฆ all the way to the 11, 55 minutes past. We write 10 minutes past 3 as 3:10: the hour first, then the minutes.
Magic trick: Point at the number the minute hand is on and multiply by 5: the minute hand on 4 means 4 ร 5 = 20 minutes past.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Buttercup Park and find:
- ๐ช Find the 5 kites in a row. Count by 5s along them: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25. That’s how the minute hand counts from number to number!
- ๐ฆ Find the 6 ducks on the pond. Count by 5s again: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. Six jumps of 5 minutes make half an hour.
- ๐ฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
