Isn't, Don't and Can't: The Lemonade Stand
Zoe and Mia are open at the Lemonade Stand! Pitchers of lemonade wait on the counter, lemons sit in a row, and two bluebirds have come to watch.
Remember: A short form squeezes two words into one word, and a little mark called an apostrophe (‘) takes the place of the letters that jumped out. Many short forms are made with not: is not → isn’t, are not → aren’t, do not → don’t, does not → doesn’t, did not → didn’t and cannot → can’t. “The lemonade isn’t sweet yet!”
Magic trick: In isn’t, don’t and didn’t, only the o of not jumps out, so the apostrophe sits between the n and the t, right where the o was.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of the Lemonade Stand and find:
- 🍋 Find the 3 pitchers of lemonade. They aren’t empty: aren’t is a short way to say are not.
- 🍋 Find the 5 lemons in a row. Don’t squeeze them all at once!
- 🐦 Find the 2 bluebirds on the awning. They can’t wait for a sip!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
