Sides and Corners: Millie's Kitchen

In Millie’s Kitchen, Grandma Bea has a box of cookie cutters in every shape: triangles, squares and hexagons. Before the cookies go in the oven, Millie counts their sides and corners.

Remember: A side is a straight edge of a shape, and a corner (also called a vertex) is where two sides meet. A flat shape with straight sides has as many corners as sides: a triangle has 3, a quadrilateral 4, a pentagon 5, a hexagon 6 and an octagon 8.

Magic trick: An octopus has 8 arms and an octagon has 8 sides. Six and hexagon both have an x!

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of Millie’s Kitchen and find:

  • ๐Ÿช Find the hexagon cookies on the mint tray. There are 3 of them and each has 6 sides, so 3 ร— 6 = 18 sides altogether.
  • ๐Ÿ”บ Find the triangle cookies on the yellow tray. There are 4 of them and each has 3 corners, so 4 ร— 3 = 12 corners.
  • ๐Ÿฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
