Rounding to the Nearest Hundred: The Rounding Rollercoaster

At the Rainbow Fair, the Rounding Rollercoaster climbs one big hill between two stations. A cart that hasn’t reached the top rolls back to the first station; a cart at the very top or past it rolls forward to the next. That’s rounding to the nearest hundred!

Remember: To round to the nearest hundred, look at the tens digit. 5 or more rounds up: 350 rounds up to 400. 0 to 4 rounds down: 349 rounds down to 300.

Magic trick: Underline the hundreds digit and point at the digit just to its right: that one decides. Everything after the hundreds becomes 0.

Seek and Find

Look carefully at the picture of the Rainbow Fair and find:

  • ๐ŸŽข Find the 2 stations. Pretend the pink one is 300 and the blue one is 400. The top of the hill is halfway: 350.
  • ๐Ÿ›’ Find the empty cart low on the hill. It hasn’t reached the top, so it rolls back to the pink station, just like 320 rounds down to 300.
  • ๐ŸŽ‰ Find the 2 girls at the very top. Halfway counts as going up! Like 350, their cart rolls forward to the blue station: 400.
  • ๐Ÿฑ Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
