Challenge: Estimate and Check at Farmer Daisy's Market
Saturday is market day at Farmer Daisy’s Market! Before adding big numbers, Farmer Daisy makes a quick estimate by rounding. Then she works out the exact answer and checks that the two are close.
Remember: Estimate first, then check. 198 carrots and 304 radishes is about 200 + 300 = 500. The exact sum, 502, is close to 500, so it makes sense. If an exact answer is far from your estimate, check again!
Magic trick: Round each number to the nearest hundred so the adding is easy, then add the round numbers in your head.
Seek and Find
Look carefully at the picture of Farmer Daisy’s Market and find:
- 🥕 Find the 4 crates of carrots. If each crate holds about 100 carrots, that’s about 400 carrots.
- 🔴 Find the 3 crates of radishes. About 300 radishes. Estimate: 400 + 300 = about 700 vegetables!
- 🎃 Find the 5 pumpkins. Only 5: no rounding needed for those!
- 🐱 Millie and her kitten Biscuit are hiding in every picture. Can you spot them?
